Outline
The editorial industry consumes and provides a platform for photographic content, reproducing a picture story or feature, and reflecting the current affairs or trends of the period. The traditional print magazine covers everything from entertainment, cultural identity through to political comment.
Brief
You are required to produce a body of images that have continuity through narrative that illustrate an editorial feature on a subject of your choice. The images should be of high enough quality that the commissioning editor/picture editor would not hesitate to place them within their publication.
With research you should develop an understanding about your subject in order to have a greater understanding of what the written text/article would cover thus having the required images. Extended captions should also be evident in order to correctly identify the person, subject and items within an image.
It is an opportunity for you as the photographer to express your creative style yet remain within the boundaries of the publication and readership. Consideration should be applied to understand the final arena that the selected images would appear, be it a fashion, cultural, entertainment or political publication.
Requirements
Your initial research and project proposal will be discussed at a tutorial in order to provide you with the confidence to commit to the subject matter.
By developing your own editing skills you are expected to produce a series of strong images. Through tutorial feedback you will be required to submit a minimum of 10 to maximum 15 images. These will be required for presentation in the usual format / by electronic projection / computer screen. The captions for each image will be needed for inspection.
As technical competence or the ability to explore a subject will be addressed you may be required to produce the original camera files. Discretion is asked in producing for inspection a reasonable amount of images i.e. not thousands but enough to assess the standard of approach to the subject and the possibility to search for an alternative image if so needed.
